Official Contest Rules and Terms

  1. Purpose of the Contest

The Prompty Awards is a literary competition recognizing outstanding works of fiction created wholly or substantially through the use of artificial intelligence.

The purpose of the Prize is to explore and celebrate emerging forms of storytelling made possible by artificial intelligence while recognizing the creative role of the human author, creator, or creative team directing the work.

The Contest is organized by HB Publications, LLC (“Organizer”).

By submitting an entry, each entrant agrees to be bound by these Official Contest Rules.

  1. Eligibility

The Contest is open to individuals who are at least eighteen (18) years of age at the time of entry, unless otherwise specified by the Organizer.

Entries may be submitted from any country, subject to applicable laws and regulations.

Employees, contractors, judges, and immediate family members of the Organizer or members of the judging panel may not enter the Contest.

The Organizer reserves the right to reject any entry that does not comply with these Rules.

  1. Eligible Works

The Contest is open to original works of fiction created wholly or substantially with the assistance of artificial intelligence. This means that at least 50% of the final prose has been generated by AI.

 

Eligible forms of fiction may include:

  • Literary Fiction
  • Science Fiction
  • Mystery and thriller fiction
  • Speculative Fiction
  • Romance
  • Historical fiction

Specific categories, word-count requirements, and submission requirements will be published on the Contest website.

  1. Artificial Intelligence Requirement

This Contest is specifically intended for fiction created using artificial intelligence.

Each entrant must disclose the role artificial intelligence played in the creation of the submitted work.

Entrants may use AI for one or more aspects of the creative process, including:

  • Generating prose
  • Developing plot concepts
  • Creating characters
  • Writing dialogue
  • Developing settings
  • Revising or rewriting passages
  • Brainstorming ideas
  • Translating or adapting original text
  • Other creative or editorial functions

The entrant must provide a truthful description of the AI tools used and the extent to which artificial intelligence contributed to the final work.

The Organizer may establish separate categories based on the degree or type of AI involvement.

  1. Human Creative Contribution

The human entrant remains responsible for the creative direction, selection, editing, arrangement, prompting, revision, and submission of the work.

The Contest recognizes that AI-assisted fiction may involve varying levels of human participation. Entries will not be disqualified solely because artificial intelligence generated a substantial portion of the prose, provided that the entrant accurately discloses the role of AI.

The entrant must identify themselves as the person or persons responsible for submitting and directing the work.

  1. Originality and Intellectual Property

By entering the Contest, each entrant represents and warrants that:

  1. The submitted work is original as submitted to the Contest.
  2. The entrant has the legal right to submit the work.
  3. The submission does not knowingly infringe upon the copyright, trademark, privacy, publicity, or other legal rights of any person or entity.
  4. The entrant has not knowingly copied, reproduced, or substantially imitated a copyrighted work without authorization.
  5. The submission does not falsely claim to have been written by another person.
  6. The entrant has complied with the applicable terms of use of any AI system used to create the work.

The Organizer recognizes that questions surrounding copyright and artificial intelligence continue to evolve. Entrants are solely responsible for ensuring that their submissions comply with applicable law and the terms governing any tools used in the creation of the work.

  1. Prohibited Submissions

The following submissions are prohibited:

  • Plagiarized or knowingly copied works
  • Works that substantially reproduce copyrighted material without authorization
  • Submissions falsely attributed to a living or deceased author
  • Works submitted in violation of a third party’s intellectual property rights
  • Works created using confidential or unlawfully obtained materials
  • Submissions containing malware or harmful files
  • Submissions containing unlawful content
  • Submissions that violate these Official Rules

Only one entry per category is allowed for each entrant.

The Organizer reserves the right to disqualify any entry at its discretion when there is a reasonable basis to believe that the entrant has violated these Rules.

  1. Submission Requirements

Each entry must be submitted through the official Contest submission process.

Unless otherwise stated, each submission must include:

  • Title of the work
  • Entrant’s name or approved pseudonym
  • Contact information
  • Category
  • Manuscript file in the required format
  • Word count
  • AI disclosure statement
  • Description of the AI tools used
  • Brief description of the human creative contribution
  • Confirmation that the entrant agrees to these Rules

Incomplete entries may be rejected.

  1. AI Disclosure Statement

Each entrant must submit an AI disclosure statement describing the creation of the work.

The disclosure should identify:

  • The AI platform or platforms used
  • The role of AI in the creative process
  • Whether AI generated portions of the prose
  • The approximate extent of AI-generated content
  • The nature of human editing, revision, selection, or creative direction

The Organizer may request additional information or documentation concerning the creation of a submitted work.

The Organizer may publish a summary of the entrant’s AI disclosure in connection with the Contest, subject to the Organizer’s privacy policies and applicable law.

  1. Entry Fees

The applicable entry fee, if any, will be published on the official Contest website.

Entry fees are nonrefundable except where required by applicable law.

Payment of an entry fee does not guarantee selection as a finalist, winner, or recipient of feedback.

  1. Judging

Eligible submissions will be evaluated by judges selected by the Organizer.

Judges may include authors, editors, publishers, literary professionals, AI specialists, academics, critics, and other qualified individuals.

Entries may be judged using criteria including:

  • Originality and creativity
  • Quality of storytelling
  • Character development
  • Plot and structure
  • Quality and effectiveness of prose
  • Emotional or intellectual impact
  • Creative and effective use of artificial intelligence
  • Overall artistic achievement

The Organizer may use preliminary readers, scoring systems, blind judging, or multiple rounds of judging.

Judges’ decisions are final except in cases involving fraud, rule violations, or administrative error.

  1. Prizes and Awards

Prizes will be announced on the official Contest website.

Awards may include:

  • Cash prizes
  • Trophies or medals
  • Certificates
  • Digital award seals
  • Publication opportunities
  • Marketing or promotional services
  • Other prizes announced by the Organizer

The Organizer reserves the right to substitute a prize of equal or greater value if circumstances require.

Winners are responsible for any taxes, fees, or expenses associated with receiving a prize.

  1. Rights Retained by Entrants

Entrants retain ownership of the rights they possess in their submitted works.

Submission to the Contest does not transfer ownership of the work to the Organizer.

By entering, entrants grant the Organizer a nonexclusive, worldwide, royalty-free license to use the entrant’s name, approved biography, book title, cover image, and reasonable excerpts from the submitted work solely for purposes related to administering, judging, announcing, promoting, and publicizing the Contest and its winners.

No publication of a complete work will occur without a separate written agreement with the rights holder.

  1. Confidentiality

The Organizer will make reasonable efforts to protect submitted manuscripts from unauthorized disclosure.

However, entrants acknowledge that submissions must be shared with administrators, readers, judges, and others involved in the administration of the Contest.

The Organizer does not guarantee absolute confidentiality.

  1. Verification

The Organizer may request additional information to verify an entrant’s eligibility, identity, authorship claims, AI usage disclosure, or compliance with these Rules.

An entrant’s failure to provide requested information within a reasonable period may result in disqualification.

The Organizer may disqualify an entry if it determines that the entrant materially misrepresented the role of artificial intelligence in creating the work.

  1. Disqualification

The Organizer reserves the right to disqualify any entrant who:

  • Violates these Rules
  • Provides false or misleading information
  • Misrepresents AI involvement
  • Attempts to interfere with the judging process
  • Harasses judges, staff, or other entrants
  • Submits plagiarized or infringing material
  • Attempts to manipulate the Contest or its results

A prize may be withdrawn if a violation is discovered after a winner has been announced.

  1. Limitation of Liability

To the fullest extent permitted by applicable law, the Organizer and its officers, employees, contractors, judges, and representatives shall not be liable for technical failures, lost or corrupted submissions, unauthorized access, delays, interruptions, or other events beyond their reasonable control.

Entrants participate in the Contest at their own risk.

  1. Modification or Cancellation

The Organizer reserves the right to modify, suspend, or cancel the Contest if circumstances beyond its reasonable control make such action necessary.

Any material changes to these Rules will be posted on the official Contest website.

  1. Privacy

Personal information collected in connection with the Contest will be used for administering the Contest, communicating with entrants, verifying eligibility, and announcing and promoting winners.

The Organizer’s handling of personal information is subject to its applicable privacy policy and relevant laws.

  1. Governing Law

These Rules and the Contest shall be governed by the laws of Ohio, United States of America without regard to conflict-of-law principles, except where applicable law requires otherwise.

  1. Acceptance of Rules

By submitting an entry, each entrant acknowledges that they have read, understood, and agreed to these Official Contest Rules.

The entrant further acknowledges that they are responsible for the accuracy of all information provided in connection with their submission.
